How the CGPA to Percentage Formula Works

Indian universities following the semester credit system (including Anna University, VTU, Mumbai University, and many AICTE-affiliated institutions) grade students on a 10-point CGPA scale. To convert to a percentage for job applications, higher education, or official purposes, the most widely used formula is:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5

The factor 9.5 was derived empirically by Anna University to correlate CGPA scores with equivalent percentage marks. It is not an exact inverse because GPA and percentage scales were constructed independently. Different universities may specify different factors — always check your university's official conversion policy.

This calculator is for the 10-point CGPA scale used in India. If your institution uses the US 4.0 GPA scale, use the GPA to Percentage Calculator instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula to convert CGPA to percentage?

The most commonly used formula, endorsed by Anna University and widely followed by Indian universities, is: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.0 gives 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%. Some universities use a factor of 9.0 or a different multiplier — always check your university's official conversion policy.

What is the CGPA scale used in this calculator?

This calculator uses the 10-point CGPA scale common in Indian universities (including Anna University, VTU, Mumbai University, and others under the semester credit system). It is different from the US 4.0 GPA scale. If your institution uses a 4.0 or 5.0 scale, use the GPA-to-percentage converter instead.

Why is the conversion factor 9.5 and not 10?

A CGPA of 10 does not correspond to 100% because grade boundaries don't perfectly align that way. The factor 9.5 is a calibrated multiplier derived from empirical data correlating CGPA scores with percentage marks across large cohorts. Anna University officially adopted this factor, and many other Indian institutions followed. Some schools use 9.0 or a school-specific factor — use the custom factor field if your university specifies one.

How do I convert percentage back to CGPA?

Use the reverse formula: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. For example, 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA. This calculator supports both directions — enter either value to get the other.

Is a CGPA of 8.0 considered good?

On the 10-point scale, a CGPA of 8.0 corresponds to roughly 76% and is generally considered a strong academic result in India. Many employers and postgraduate programmes consider 7.5+ as 'first class with distinction'. Above 9.0 (≈85.5%) is typically exceptional. The exact interpretation depends on your institution and the competitive context.
