How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of all your semester SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) values. Each semester's SGPA is weighted by the number of credits earned in that semester, so semesters with more subjects (and therefore more credits) have a proportionally larger influence on your overall CGPA.
The Formula
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Worked Example
A student with four semesters:
Semester 1: SGPA 8.2, Credits 22
Semester 2: SGPA 7.8, Credits 22
Semester 3: SGPA 8.5, Credits 24
Semester 4: SGPA 8.0, Credits 24
Numerator: (8.2×22) + (7.8×22) + (8.5×24) + (8.0×24)
= 180.4 + 171.6 + 204 + 192 = 748.
Denominator: 22 + 22 + 24 + 24 = 92.
CGPA: 748 ÷ 92 = 8.13.
Converting CGPA to Percentage
Once you have your CGPA, use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator to convert it to a percentage using the standard formula (% = CGPA × 9.5 for Anna University and most Indian institutions).
SGPA to CGPA Reference (Equal Credits)
When all semesters carry equal credits, CGPA equals the simple average of all SGPAs. The table below shows example CGPA values for common SGPA combinations across four equal-credit semesters.
| All-semester SGPA | CGPA (equal credits) | Approx. % (× 9.5) |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 10.00 | 95.0% |
| 9.0 | 9.00 | 85.5% |
| 8.5 | 8.50 | 80.75% |
| 8.0 | 8.00 | 76.0% |
| 7.5 | 7.50 | 71.25% |
| 7.0 | 7.00 | 66.5% |
| 6.5 | 6.50 | 61.75% |
| 6.0 | 6.00 | 57.0% |
Percentage is approximate using the Anna University formula (CGPA × 9.5). Use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator for a custom factor.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your grade point average for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of all your SGPAs across every semester you have completed. CGPA gives a full-degree picture of your academic performance, while SGPA reflects a single term.
How is CGPA calculated from SGPA?
CGPA = (SGPA₁ × Credits₁ + SGPA₂ × Credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × Creditsₙ) ÷ (Credits₁ + Credits₂ + … + Creditsₙ). Each semester's SGPA is weighted by the total credits earned in that semester. Semesters with more credits have a proportionally larger influence on your CGPA.
Why do I need to enter credits for each semester?
Different semesters often carry different total credits (e.g. a semester with lab courses may have 24 credits while a lighter semester has 18). A simple average of SGPAs would be inaccurate unless all semesters have identical credits. Weighting by credits gives the correct overall CGPA.
What if all my semesters have the same number of credits?
If every semester has identical credits, the credit-weighted CGPA equals the simple average of your SGPAs. You can still enter the credits for accuracy, or simply enter any equal number (e.g. 20 for each) — the result will be the same.
My CGPA on my marksheet is slightly different from the calculator — why?
Your institution may apply rounding at the subject level before computing SGPA, or may use a slightly different weighting formula for repeated or backlog subjects. The calculator uses the standard weighted-average formula. For official records always refer to your university's transcript.
