How Points-Based Grading Works
In a points-based grading system every assignment, quiz, and exam is worth a set number of raw points. Your overall grade is simply the ratio of the total points you earned to the total points possible — the same formula as a single test score, applied across all your work for the term.
The Formula
percent = (sum of points earned ÷ sum of points possible) × 100
How Assignment Size Sets the Weight
Unlike a weighted-percentage system (where each category is explicitly assigned a percentage of the final grade), points-based grading lets the size of each assignment determine its importance automatically. A 200-point final naturally counts twice as much as a 100-point midterm, with no extra configuration needed.
Worked Example
A student has the following scores for the semester:
Homework 1: 87 / 100
Homework 2: 92 / 100
Midterm: 145 / 200
Final exam: 170 / 200
Total earned: 87 + 92 + 145 + 170 = 494.
Total possible: 100 + 100 + 200 + 200 = 600.
Grade: 494 ÷ 600 × 100 = 82.3% — B.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a points-based grading system work?
In a points-based system, each assignment or assessment is worth a set number of points. Your final grade is your total points earned divided by the total points possible, multiplied by 100. For example, if you earned 430 points out of a possible 500, your grade is 430 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86% — a B.
Why is points-based grading different from weighted-percentage grading?
In a weighted-percentage system each category (homework, tests, final) is given a fixed percentage of your grade regardless of how many items are in that category. In a points-based system the weight of each assignment is implicitly set by its point value — a 200-point exam naturally counts twice as much as a 100-point midterm without any explicit weighting. Neither method is inherently better; this calculator handles the points-based approach.
What if some rows are blank or zero?
The calculator ignores rows where the points possible is zero, so you can safely leave incomplete rows empty. Only rows with a positive points-possible value contribute to the total.
How can I use this to track my grade mid-semester?
Enter only the assignments you have received back so far. The calculator will show your current percentage based on completed work. As new grades come in, add them to the list and your running total updates automatically.
