Letter Grade to GPA Chart (4.0 Scale)

The table below shows every letter grade and its corresponding GPA value on the standard US 4.0 scale. This is the scale used by most American high schools and colleges for unweighted GPA calculations.

Letter Grade GPA Points (4.0 scale)
A 4.0
A+ 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7
D+ 1.3
D 1.0
D- 0.7
F 0.0

A+ and A both map to 4.0 on the standard scale. Some institutions assign A+ = 4.3 — check your school's grading policy.

How to Convert GPA to a Letter Grade

The GPA-to-letter mapping uses threshold values. A GPA of 3.85 or higher is an A; 3.5–3.84 is an A-; 3.15–3.49 is a B+; and so on. Because GPA is a continuous number while letter grades are discrete categories, there is a range of GPA values that all map to the same letter grade.

To convert in the other direction — from letter grade to GPA — each letter has a fixed point value on the 4.0 scale (e.g. B = 3.0, C+ = 2.3). This is what institutions use to compute your semester and cumulative GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a GPA to a letter grade?

Match your GPA to the nearest band on the 4.0 scale: 3.85–4.0 = A, 3.5–3.84 = A-, 3.15–3.49 = B+, 2.85–3.14 = B, and so on down to F at 0.0–0.49. Enter your GPA above and the converter returns the letter grade instantly.

What letter grade is a 3.0 GPA?

A 3.0 GPA corresponds to a B on the standard 4.0 scale. It represents an 80–89% average and is generally considered the minimum for competitive graduate school applications and many scholarships.

What letter grade is a 3.5 GPA?

A 3.5 GPA falls in the A- range on the plus/minus scale (3.5–3.84). On the basic five-letter scale it rounds to an A. It represents a strong academic record and is often the benchmark for honours, Dean's List, and competitive programmes.

What GPA is an A, and what is an A-?

On the standard US plus/minus scale, an A maps to 4.0 GPA and an A- maps to 3.7 GPA. Both require a grade in the 90%+ range, though the exact percentage cutoff for A vs A- varies by school (commonly 93% for A, 90% for A-).

Why does an A+ still show as 4.0 GPA?

On the most common US 4.0 scale both A and A+ are capped at 4.0 — there is no numerical distinction at the top. Some institutions award A+ a value of 4.3 or 4.33 as an exception; if your school uses that policy, use your official transcript or registrar's GPA calculation.
