How the Final Grade Calculator Works
Your course grade is a weighted average of all your assessments. Before the final, the work you've already completed accounts for (100% − final weight) of your grade. The final exam accounts for the remaining weight. The calculator uses those proportions to work backwards from your target grade.
The Formula
required = (desired − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
Where w is the final exam weight expressed as a decimal (e.g. 30% → 0.30), current is your current overall percentage, and desired is the overall percentage you want to finish with.
Worked Example
Suppose your current grade is 85%, you want to finish with 90%, and the final exam is worth 30% of your grade:
required = (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30
required = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 30.5 ÷ 0.30 ≈ 101.67%
Because 101.67% exceeds 100%, this target is not achievable through the final exam alone — even a perfect score won't get you there. You would need to lower your target or explore extra credit options with your instructor.
Interpreting Your Result
- Score > 100% — Not achievable. Even a perfect final exam won't reach your target. Consider adjusting your goal or speaking with your instructor.
- Score between 0% and 100% — This is the minimum score you need. Aim above this number to give yourself a buffer.
- Score ≤ 0% — You've already secured your target grade. Any score on the final (including zero) will not drop you below your goal.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Use the formula: required = (desired − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam weight expressed as a decimal (e.g. 30% → 0.30). For example, if your current grade is 85%, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 30%: required = (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.67%. Since that exceeds 100%, the target is not achievable with the final exam alone.
What does it mean if the calculator says the grade is not achievable?
If the required score exceeds 100%, it means no possible score on the final exam can bring your grade up to your target. This happens when your current grade is too low and/or the final exam is not weighted heavily enough to make up the difference. In this case, consider speaking with your instructor about extra credit or other options.
What if the calculator says I've already secured my target grade?
If the required score is 0% or below, it means you have already locked in at least your target grade regardless of what you score on the final. You still need to sit the exam in most courses, but even a 0% on the final would not drop your grade below your desired level.
How do I find out what my final exam is worth?
The final exam weight (or percentage of your overall grade) is usually stated in your course syllabus. It is often listed in a grading breakdown such as 'Midterm 30%, Final 30%, Homework 40%'. If you cannot find it, ask your instructor directly.
Can I use this calculator for quizzes, midterms, or other assessments?
Yes. The same formula works for any single upcoming assessment. Enter your current grade (excluding the upcoming assessment), the overall grade you want to finish with, and the weight of the upcoming assessment. The calculator will tell you exactly what score you need on that assessment.
What if I have multiple remaining assignments, not just a final?
This calculator is designed for a single upcoming assessment. If you have multiple remaining assignments, you would need to decide on a target score for each one separately, or combine their weights and treat them as one block. For example, if a quiz (10%) and a final (25%) remain, and you plan to score 80% on the quiz, you can recalculate a new 'current grade' including that projected quiz score, then find what you need on the final.
