What Is a Middle School GPA?

A middle school GPA is an unweighted grade point average computed on the standard 4.0 scale. Every course is treated equally regardless of subject — there are no Honors or AP bonus points at the middle school level because those course types generally aren't offered yet. An A earns 4.0 points, a B earns 3.0, and so on.

Middle school GPA matters most for course placement: strong grades in 7th and 8th grade typically unlock access to honors or accelerated classes when you start high school, which shapes the rigor of the transcript colleges will eventually see.

The GPA Formula

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

If all your courses carry equal weight (common in middle school), enter 1 credit for each course and the calculator computes a simple average of your grade points.

Grade Point Reference

Letter Grade Grade Points (4.0 scale) Typical Percentage
A+ / A4.090–100%
A-3.790–92%
B+3.387–89%
B3.080–86%
B-2.777–79%
C+2.373–76%
C2.070–72%
D1.060–69%
F0.0Below 60%

Worked Example

A student takes six equally-weighted courses and earns: A, A, B+, B, B, C+. Their grade points are 4.0, 4.0, 3.3, 3.0, 3.0, 2.3. The GPA = (4.0 + 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 2.3) ÷ 6 = 19.6 ÷ 6 ≈ 3.27.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA scale does middle school use?

Most US middle schools use the standard unweighted 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Some schools also report plus/minus grades (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.). Because advanced courses are not offered at the middle school level, every course is treated equally — there is no weighted GPA bonus for harder classes.

Does my middle school GPA affect my high school or college GPA?

In virtually all cases, no. Middle school grades appear on a separate transcript and are not carried forward into your high school cumulative GPA. High schools calculate your GPA fresh starting from 9th grade (or sometimes 8th grade if you take high school credit courses). Colleges look at your high school GPA, not your middle school record.

Why does middle school GPA matter if it doesn't count?

Middle school grades can influence which high school courses you're placed into — such as honors English or algebra — which in turn affects the rigor of your high school transcript. Strong middle school performance opens doors to advanced coursework, which is something colleges do consider. Think of middle school GPA as setting the course-placement foundation for your high school career.

How is middle school GPA calculated?

Middle school GPA uses the same credit-weighted average formula as high school: multiply each course's grade points by the number of credit hours (or equal weight if all courses count the same), sum the products, and divide by total credits. Many middle schools weight every class equally, so the GPA is simply the average grade point across all courses.

What is a good GPA in middle school?

A GPA of 3.0 (B average) or above is generally considered good in middle school and signals readiness for standard high school courses. A 3.5 or higher (B+/A- range) is strong and may qualify you for honors or accelerated classes in high school. The most important thing at this stage is building study habits rather than chasing a specific number.

Can I use this calculator for a single semester or a full year?

Yes. Enter only the courses from a single semester to see your semester GPA, or enter all courses across the whole school year for an annual average. The formula is identical — just add as many course rows as you need and the calculator will credit-weight them automatically.
